Q. What is hair transplant?

Hair Transplant is a surgical solution for hair restoration in which hair follicles are removed from donor site to implant in the bald areas.

Q. What are the techniques of hair transplant?

There are two types of hair transplant treatment methods based on the way the extraction of follicles is done:

1. FUE (Follicular unit Extraction) : A hair transplantation method that don't require stitches in which hair roots are taken from the back of head after application of local anesthesia with special micro-punches and implanted in the bald area.

2. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) : A new invention, where a strip of skin from the donor area is removed with scalpel and the gap is then stitched together. Then the strip is divided into grafts with 1 ,2 or 3 hair follicles.

Based up on the density and thickness of your hair, you can make the choice on which type to undergo.

Q. Can anyone undergo a hair transplant? If not what are the limitations?

Both men and women suffering significant hair fall and getting their scalp exposed or have bald patches can undergo hair transplant. But, people with scalp problems like scalp psoriasis, keloid tendency of scalp skin, scalp dermatitis, etc. cannot go for surgical hair transplant. Also those who get baldness due to health conditions like cancer or Alopecia areata cannot go for hair transplant.

Q. What is the life of transplanted hair?

As the hair follicles which are transplanted to the bald area are genetically resistant to baldness, they will continue to grow for a life time.

Q. How long does it take for the hair transplant procedure?

The duration of the hair transplant is dependent on factors like:

1. Number of grafts being implanted

2. Procedure being followed

The FUT procedure takes usually takes 4 to 8 hours, depending on the number of grafts to be implanted.

Q. When will I see the hair growth after a transplant?

After the transplant is done, hair which is planted over bald patches falls off in just 2 to 3 weeks leaving behind the active hair follicle that grows after 2 to 3 months. Therefore, actual hair growth is visible after 6 to 9 months.

Q. Is it painful?

The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia and is not painful.

Q. Is there a right age to begin the treatment? Am I too young for a hair transplant?

Though there is no specific age limit for hair transplant, but it is advisable to go for an expert trichologist for suggestions when you see uncontrollable hair fall.

Q. What is an implant with high density?

This is the skill of placing follicular units closer to get a natural look with density in a single method. This actually mentions about the hairline design without huge gaps.

Q. What is transected follicular growth rate?

Hair transection is loss of hair when removed from the donor area and occurs due to damage to the follicular units in the donor area during extraction process. An acceptable level of transection is about 5-7%. The growth rate is the amount in percentage of follicular units grown after implanted in the bald area. The growth of implanted follicular units in the bald area will be compromised if the follicular unit not places rightly, not well maintained till time of implantation, or gets damaged during placement. Other factors which affect growth rate is how a patient complies with post-operative instructions; failure to which will also affect hair growth. The expected growth rate is about 94-98%.

Q. Will I need more than one hair transplant?

Factors like age and progression of hair loss determines if you need more than one hair transplant. In many cases, the person receives more than one procedure, though this might take several years before another hair transplant. Whether you need any additional procedure gets determined by the quality of the hair transplant performed. With high quality procedure it will last longer for another round of hair restoration procedure to undertake.

With the FUT method scars are left on the donor site of the head. But not to worry, it gets covered as hair grows again.

Hairs start growing during the first month and then drops out, this is normal to see 100% of transplanted hairs to fall in the first month post the procedure. It takes about 3 to 4 months to see growth resume and grow naturally. By the 12th month, hair growth is 90%, while the remaining 10% will happen in the next 6 months. It preferable take an year and a half with appreciable final results.

Q. What is the FUT method and what is the difference with other techniques?

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) is a highly efficient method where a long thin strip of scalp is removed, typically from the back of the head. The hair follicles are next divided into single units under a microscope. The gap is then stitched. The strip is then divided into grafts with hair follicles.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a conventional technique where a punch is used to make a small circular cut in the skin around a hair follicle or a number of follicles, removing them from the scalp, leaving a small open hole. The process is repeated enough follicles are obtained. The holes leave tiny white scars and could be undetectable based on the skills of the surgeon.

Q. How painful is the post-surgery?

There could be some pain and tightness in the donor area for which some pain medication are provided in post-operation kit.

Q. Is there more than one donor area?

The FUT technique is limited as it uses the back of the head as donor area. It cannot access other areas.

Q. Does the FUT hair transplant extraction method have any limitations?

FUT mainly has two limitations:

1. Scarring

2. Longer recovery period

Q. Why is the baldness different in men and women?

The common cause of baldness in both men and women is due to hair fall because of hormonal imbalance. In men, androgen damages the hair follicles and leads to irreversible baldness. In women estrogen counteracts the negative actions of androgen. But, when the estrogen level drop leading to rise of androgen, women starts losing hair. The process of hair thinning in men passes through 7 stages and pattern of hair loss is U-shaped. It begins with thinning of hair on the hairline or crown, that advances to top of the head; leaving only a band of hair on the back side. On the other hand, in women hair thinning progresses via 3 stages that starts with diffuse fall or thinning on top.

If your diabetes is under control yes, you can go for hair transplant surgery. One consequence could be poor wound healing. Fortunately wounds on the scalp with adequate blood supply heals fast than that happens in wounds of feet.

Q. Is any cancer patient can go through the process?

The typical answer is Yes! Usually during cancer treatment, hair fall occurs because of some chemo therapeutic drugs. Hair generally grows back post treatment, but can take 6 -12 months. So, patients are suggested to wait for the duration. If yet there is no hair growth, and there are no other medical contraindications; the patient can be a candidate for hair transplantation.

Q. What kind of follow up will I need?

With FUT, post operation care must be taken for both the donor and the area where hair has been transplanted. So there would be some follow up sessions as per doctor's recommendations.

Q. Are there any medicines prescribed post hair transplant sessions?

Yes, some pain killers and medications are provided post surgery. You must take the medications prescribed for you by your doctor to strengthen the hair roots, boost up growth and speedy recovery.
